Hayley West

Australia Council for the Arts Residency

Hayley West’s practice relates to a lived awareness of death and memorial and incorporates sculpture, video, performance and installation. Her research explores the realities of grief through personal experiences and artistic practice, focusing on the inevitability of one’s own death and the impact on those remaining. As an artist working in the public realm, Hayley believes in empowering the community by sharing practical knowledge through exchange and generosity.

Hayley practice spans over 20 years of research, exhibitions and international residencies.
Hayley is a Death Literacy Advocate, a member of the Natural Death Advocacy Network, on the board of the Castlemaine Cemetery Trust, Australia. Hayley has co-hosted Death Cafes (where people - often strangers - gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death, with the objective to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their finite lives) since 2014, in the Blue Mountains, Canberra, Senegal and Castlemaine.
