Daniel von Sturmer

Australia Council for the Arts Residency

Daniel von Sturmer is a multimedia artist living and working in Melbourne. Daniel’s practice involves a range of media and approaches including video, photography and installation. His works orchestrate a field of relations between people and things, light and space, video and time, where the encounter between audience and artwork reveals a dialectical interplay of viewer and viewed. His approach is experimental, playfully testing expectations of quotidian occurrences and ordinary experience.

Recent solo exhibitions include: CATARACT, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne, Australia (2019); Spacemakers and Roomshakers, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2018); Luminous Figures, Starkwhite Gallery, Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand (2017); Focus & Field and Camera Ready Actions, Young Projects Gallery, Los Angeles, U.S.A (2014); After Images, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne, Australia (2013); Daniel von Sturmer, as part of Ground Control series, Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, USA (2013); and Video Works 2008-2009, Karsten Schubert Gallery, London, UK (2010).

Daniel represented Australia at the 52nd Venice Biennale and was the winner of the Melbourne Prize for Sculpture in 2017. Daniel’s work is held in numerous public and private collections, nationally and internationally, including the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Sweden; Dunedin Public Art Gallery, New Zealand; and Australian state gallery collections.
